Spring has finally arrived and with it the danger of wild-
fires. As everybody cleans their yards, please remember
that the danger of wildfires exist. The winter storm in De-
cember brought down many trees and broke off many pine
branches that are extremely flammable. If you cannot com-
post or wait for snow to again cover the ground, and if you
must bum your brush, remember to check the local ordi-
nances for legality and that a bum permit is required, as the
snow has now left the ground.
Even though the wind may be calm when you start a brush
pile, it can increase later. The possibility of a wind increase
is one of the reasons obtaining a bum permit is mandatory.
Stay with your fire. You should have tools and water avail-
able on site to extinguish your fire.
Remember the number one cause of wildfires in Michigan
is burning debris. If there is no other option, be aware not
only of your property, but your neighbors' and the sur-
rounding community, weather conditions, legality, and to
obtain a bum permit. Be safe foremost and have a great day.

Kudos go to Joe Bresinski for volunteer-
ing with the Americorps Urban Safety
Project. The group of 30 volunteers
boarded up broken windows and doors
and cleaned up backyards of overgrown
trees and debris of three homes in Detroit.
Neighbors in the area were so pleased to
see this being done that they too helped
clear debris and leaves. Joe was pictured
on the front page of the Detroit News us-
ing a chain saw on a rotted porch. ]oe is
the son of member Sharon Marcrum.
Do you remember that on April 12, 1955
the Salkvaccine was declared safe, potent
and effective? And, almost miraculously,
polio declined following the introduction
of the preventive vaccine.
