16 Wednesday, October 23, 2013 The Montmorency County Tribune CARDINAL KALIN LEONARD drops Nick Harrington of the Snowbirds to bring up fourth down. Cardinals soar to take down St. Mary Snowbirds by Yvonne Swager The Cardinals from Staff reporter Johannesburg-Lewiston traveled to Gaylord on Oct. 18 to pummel the St. Mary Snowbirds on their own turf. The Snowbirds needed a win to secure a playoff spot, but it wasn't to be. On Joburg's first possession, Dillon Cushman earned a couple of first downs and a penalty against the defense handed over another. On second and three, Nick May trotted into the end zone to put the Cardinals on the board. A long Snowbird pass put them deep in Cardinal territory, but a fourth- down field goal attempt was blocked and Joburg's Ethan May escaped with the ball. A first down from May, one from Brandon Huff and a personal foul on the Snowbirds inched the Cardinals closer. May dodged through for the touchdown, and Huff made good on the extra two points to put the Cardinals up by 14 at the end of the first quarter. The teams traded fumbles, and the Snowbirds made good on their recovery with three first downs and an eventual score and extra point to keep them in the game. Cameron Nickert made tracks on the return to start the Cardinals in Snowbird territory. Cushman pegged away at the yardage, and DominicVogt helpedJoburg to first and goal. Cushman went the rest of the way for the touchdown, and two from May put the Cardinals up by 15 at the half. The Snowbirds were making gains when May intercepted to give possession back to Joburg. Three first downs and un- sportsmanlike conduct against the Snow- birds helped the Cardinals, and Nick May bolted to the end zone to pad the score gap. The Snowbirds ate up the yardage to mid-field, but Nickertintercepted to hand the ball back to the Cardinals. On third and goal, Huff scored a touchdown on a keeper, and Logan Huff picked up the extra two to put the Cardinals up by 29 at the end of the third. The Snowbirds started the final quarter on fourth down and were dropped for a loss, but a Cardinal fumble was recovered by Gaylord's Jack Lochinski, who dashed 65 yards on the fumble return for a touch- down. A kick for the extra left the Snow- birds trailing by 22. A long return set the Cardinals in good position, and Huff eventually eamed a touchdown on a nine-yard run. Ethan May picked up the extra two to put the Cardinals up by 30. With just over seven minutes to go in the game, the Snowbirds had barely gotten started on their possession when they fumbled the ball. Joburg's Brad Kussrow snagged the loose ball and headed for the end zone to take the game to the final score of 50-14, Cardinals.
