I was at my mom's recently. She onlylives a two-. hour drive south of here, and I was amazed to see not just buds starting to form on some of the trees in her yard, but some of them well on their way ro being leaves. Here crocuses were blooming and the tulips looked like theywere on the verge of sprout- ing their buds. "Already?" I'm think- ing to myself, but then they haven't had any real snow on the ground for awhile nowandtheygot aU the warm weather we did. You know, when it hit the forty's here. And the growing things there were loving it. Then I went another hour south and sawlots of green grass everywhere. It gives me hope that we will be seeing the same things in a fewweeks' time. I really am ready to see those things on a regular basis and put away my winter stuff for a few (several!) months. The Chief Shawano Chapter DAN has busy a week this week. Earlier this week, on Monday and Tuesday, was the State Awards Days down in Lan- sing at the Kellogg Center. There are always some of the members who make the trip down for that. Now on Saturday, April 13, is their regular meeting at BJ's in Gaylord. The lun- cheon meeting starts at 11:30 and the speaker for their program is Donna Marrs. Her topic will be "The Sign- ers." The public is always welcome to attend the meeting. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Sharon, the chapter regent, at 786- 3795. The Thunder Bay Transportation Authority provides bussing service not onlyinMontmorencyCounty, but Alpena and Alcona Counties as well: You can make arrangements to get picked up and taken to doctor ap- pointments, physical therapy, shop- ping, etc. If you are 65 years of age and older, or have any type of disability you can apply to get a reduced fare. Applications can be picked up at the 50 Plus Club and mailed or faxed to the transportation office in Alpena. With prior arrangement, you may even be able to have the bus to take you to another county line to be picked up by a bus from that county for appointments out of the serviced area for Thunder Bay. This is a won- defful service that is terribly under- used, mainly because people aren't aware of it. I hope this helps promote more service for more people. I got a call this week telling me that when Grace Halberg celebrates her birthday on April 15 It will be num- ber 97. How amazing is that. My family moved to Lewiston in 1977, and it didn't take me long to learn who that lady was that seemed to be all over town, volunteering her time for all kinds of things. I was told then that she should be called "Amazing Grace," and that still holds true to- day. Happy birthday, Grace. Bless- ings to you now and always from the folks in and around Lewiston. Happy anniversary wishes for the week are being extended to Jim and Carol Havrilla, April 10; Bill and lulie White, April 11; Mike and Bobble Ryan, April 12; and Bob and Roxie Chumack, April 14. The whole family is wishing Dor- othy Haas a happy birthday. She shares her day with her great-grand- son, Gavin Weaver. Their big day is April 11. This week's birthdaywishes go out to Judy Luczak and Jim Schmidt, April 10; Mary Lou Barber, Alexandra Goldburt, Dorothy Haas, Gavin Weaver and Tom Parks, April 11; Dale LaPointe, April 12; Shirley Heppler, Tom Klein and Michael Williams, April 13; Deanna Fischhaber, larett Hofstra, Lois Holmes, Marjorie Hunt, Bill LaPointe, Lynn Marson and Maxine Shepherd, April 14; Grace Halberg, April 15; and April Armstrong, Dominic Ball, Brian Boughner, Tonya Chrivia and Frank Kibby, April 16. General Dentistry Lewiston Lakes Quilters UJ Gimb Just a brief item so I could inform our snowbirds and shut-ins of our future activities. It's been a quiet winter, but now that the weather has changed and our members are returning, we have planned a few outings. We hope all of you are back and can join in. On April 18 we are having a table runner class by Dee C. in the morning, then having lunch at the Tin Lizzy in Mio. Since we are all quilters, we will have to make a stop at the fabric store too. The springluncheon date has been set. It will be held on May 16. Bring your inspiration picture and project, items for our auction, show and tell, and a dish to pass. We heard of a new quilt shop in Pinconning, which might be an idea for a shop hop later. We are looking forward to another year of new creative quilting ideas. Read the Tribune on the Web!
